With the support of nearly 3,000 Columbia citizens, Keep Columbia Safe was able to put Proposition 1—the issue of downtown safety cameras—on the April 6 ballot. It succeeded with more than 11,000 voters reinforcing the importance of community safety in Columbia.
Proposition 1 gives Columbia Police will have the authority to deploy downtown cameras where and when they deem appropriate.
As it’s written, Proposition 1 will include limitations regarding the use of safety cameras. For example, cameras must be placed in conspicuous areas, and will only capture images that can be seen from public places where there is no reasonable expectation of privacy.
There also will be requirements for camera deployment. For example, public notice will be given prior to camera deployment, and the public will be given an opportunity to comment on planned use.
